World War 1 Aircraft

World War 1 dogfights over Rhinebeck! It happens every Sunday, June through October, at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome on New York’s “Western Front”. Here a small group of intrepid visionaries, under the master’s hand of the late Cole Palen, has assembled a living museum of airplanes from the Great War. This is more than a collection of retired antiques. The airplanes are frequently mud spattered and stained with castor oil – for flying, not merely collecting, is what Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome is all about. Great pride is taken in flying original aircraft or accurate copies powered with original engines. This colorful era is brought back to life amidst the roar of rotary engines, the smell of burnt castor oil and the sound of wind in the wires as the biplanes sweep down the field. See history repeat itself in an aerial stage show.

All this real action is tied in with a farcical melodrama involving a hero, gallant Sir Percy Goodfellow; a heroine, fair maiden Trudy Truelove; and a villain; the dastardly Black Baron; making a spoof of war with a mixture of nonsense, humor and nostalgia – all for your added entertainment.

Below you will find a list of World War 1 aircraft that are currently part of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome collection. Click on the associated links for additional information.
