Designer Rauol Hoffman was in the shoe industry and reportedly got his inspiration when he threw a shoe wedge out of a new box–it flew beautifully. In its test flight, pilot Glen Doolittle demonstrated the STOL capabilities of the Arup S-2 when it reached an angle of attack of 35 degrees without stalling. The S-2 incorporated a conventional rudder for yaw. Pitch and roll were accomplished by a mix of control surfaces at the trailing edges combined with small, movable semi-circular wing tips to improve roll. The S-2 had beautifully faired wheel pants and conventional fixed gear. Access to the tiny cockpit requires the pilot to execute a rather gymnastic entry via a hatch in the belly.
Long time pilot and expert fabricator/mechanic Ken Cassens is nearing completion of the Arup. Working only with simple, 3-view drawings and a handful of period photos, Ken has skillfully recreated this unique aircraft. We anticipate this will be an outstanding addition to the shows!
