The Avro arrived at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in 1971 and flew on and off from May 1972 through 2009. It was built in 1966 under the supervision of Vivian Bellamy for Mirisch Productions, Inc. to be used in a proposed film called “The Bells of Hell Go Ting-a-ling-a-ling, Death Where Art Thy Sting-a-ling-a-ling?” The movie was never made. The Avro is powered with an original 110 HP Le Rhone rotary engine. The construction is close to the original design. However, the fuselage is all wood with glued plywood gussets rather than wire-braced wood construction.
The Avro suffered a forced landing in 2009, from which the pilot walked away unharmed. Friend of the Aerodrome, Al Cvelbar is currently repairing two of the wings in his home shop.
