The first Morane Saulnier aircraft appeared in 1911 and the company continues to build aircraft to this day. Designed as an advanced trainer and used for light reconnaissance and postal work, this type aircraft was introduced in 1925 and 143 were ordered by the French Navy. It became a favorite of French aerobatic pilots.
A similar aircraft was featured in the closing scenes of the popular 1966 WWI aviation film, “The Blue Max” starring George Peppard. Interestingly, Jack Hunter (author of the book that became the film) visited Cole Palen at Old Rhinebeck for inspiration and technical information while he was writing the book.
Dramatic footage of Cole Palen flying this aircraft appears in the award-winning film, “Cole Palen’s Flying Circus,” by Werner Volkmer.
