The Morane Saulnier N, “Bullet” was advanced for 1914, when most designs were pusher biplanes. It was fitted with triangular blades on the back of the propeller which deflected machine gun bullets fired through the arc of the propeller. Famed French Aviator Roland Garros went down behind enemy lines in a Bullet and could not destroy it before his capture. The aircraft was turned over to Anthony Fokker, who quickly produced a superior “synchronous” design. Our Bullet uses an original M. S. A-I fuselage and newly fabricated wings.

Morgan

The prototype for the Morgan Tricar was built in 1909 by H.S.F. Morgan. He used the V-twin engine from a wrecked Peugeot motorcycle. Morgan three-wheelers were built up until 1948 when the supply of V-twin engines was exhausted.

Charles Day designed the New Standard D-25 to replace the aging WWI aircraft being used by the flying circuses of the late 1920s. It was built to carry four passengers from small, unimproved fields. After their passenger-hopping careers those attributes made them great crop dusters and helped them survive. This former duster carried passengers at the Aerodrome for years and will return to service after its restoration.

The NB-8G was a unique light plane. It could take off and land “hands off,” had folding wings for storage or transport, and an optional cockpit enclosure for cold weather. Our example was restored in 1958, donated to the EAA Museum and was purchased by Cole Palen, at auction, in 1982.

The Nieuport 10 was designed in 1914 by Gustave Delage to compete in a Gordon Bennett race. World War I cancelled the race and Delage converted it into a two-seat reconnaissance machine, and later, a single-seat fighter. This original aircraft was once owned by the WWI French ace, Charles Nungesser who flew this machine postwar in France, the US, and in Cuba. In 1925, he starred in the movie “The Sky Raider” along with this Nieuport 10 and a Hanriot HD.1.

The Nieuport 11, nicknamed Bébé, appeared in January 1916, just in time for the Battle of Verdun. It was here that the nimble Nieuport 11 far outclassed the Fokker monoplane fighters that had dominated the air war since 1915. This is the machine that helped earn the new Escadrille Americaine (later known as the Lafayette Escadrille) its reputation for daring exploits in the skies of France which inspired many more Americans to volunteer and fight for the Allied cause.

The larger Nieuport 17 appeared in May 1916 to great acclaim. The powerful 110 HP Le Rhone and a synchronized, forward-firing Vickers machine gun, made the well-balanced sesquiplane fighter a favorite of French, British, Belgian, Italian and Russian pilots for well over a year. Even the Lafayette Escadrille and its American pilots enjoyed the prowess of the Nieuport 17.

Designed and flown by Édouard Nieuport, this low-powered monoplane set a world speed record of 74 mph in May 1911. Later in July, C.T. Weymann, representing the U.S.A., won the Gordon Bennet Trophy race in a Gnome-powered Nieuport at 78 mph. Nieuport became a world-famous brand during the many competitions of the Pioneer era.

Packard Moving Van

Ground Vehicles


William Dowd Packard and James Ward Packard (brothers) built the first Packard in Warren, Ohio in 1899. Eventually they became known as producers of luxury cars. The Aerodrome’s Packard Moving van played a small role in the movie “The Night they Raided Minsky’s” starring Jason Robards, Britt Ekland and Elliot Gould in 1968.
